Smith on a roll at club champs

- GEOFF STEPHEN

ROUND 5 of the Border Karting Club championships took place on Saturday and some more high-paced action by young and old.

Karters and spectators were treated to perfect weather, which made for some great racing!

In the Cadette class, it was encouraging to see the return of Dylan Stevens, which certainly made for some exciting racing. Jordan van der Merwe once again stamped his authority on the class, winning the day, followed closely by the everimproving Red Scholtz. Stevens was third, followed by Heath Vallance and Caleb Odendaal.

The 60cc Juniors class was the one to watch, bolstered by Kenzo Barnard’s return from Port Elizabeth. Sebastian Smith won all three heats, in an absolute dominant performance, despite having problems on the day. He was followed closely by Barnard, with van der Merwe third.

Fourth was Kaylim Padayachee, followed by Daniel van Zummeran, Jordan Dorning, Vallance and Scholtz.

Clubmans class saw the return of Kyle Heideman, and Geoff Stephen making his debut for 2017. Stephen missed out on qualifying, and had to start at the back of the grid. He managed to fight his way through to first, ahead of Jared de Kock and Ashton Nell, to take the overall win on the day.

Final results were de Kock first in Class B, followed by Nell. Stephen won Class C ahead of the ever- improving Heideman, who set a personal best time on the day. Stephens’ performance sees him moving up to Class B for the final round of the year.

DD2 proved to be an action packed class on the day. Special mention must be made of Brent Strydom, who qualified on pole for the first time in his career.

Strydom and Shaun Gradwell were plagued with problems, and a magnetic force attracting them towards each other, causing a race two clash. Special mention must also be made of David Burberry, who finished a career best second in heat 2. Overall results for the day saw Stephen taking the win, followed by Craig Borges, Gradwell, Burberry, Kevin Vosloo, Brent Strydom and Jared de Kock.

Join Border Karting for our final round of the championships on October 14, which promises to be an action-packed session finale.
