Chintsa girl on scholarship to DSG
FORMER African Angels Independent School Grade 7 pupil Indiphile Velebayi made the two-hour journey to Grahamstown this week, where she will be attending Grade 8 at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) on a full boarding bursary.
Indiphile, 13, was one of African Angels' top students, receiving the top marks for mathematics over the past three years.
“Mathematics is my favourite subject, because I like numbers and I can understand them easily. I do not really like history, because of all the dates you have to remember, but it's not hard,” a confident Indiphile said.
Along with meeting various academic requirements, Indiphile was also required to take part in a team-building day at DSG as part of the school's sponsorship programme.
“Indie did very well in the screening tests for the Schools Scholarship Programme, but she is also an excellent team member and natural leader,” African Angels founder Lou Billet said.
Situated in Chintsa, African Angels Independent School was first opened in 2012 and caters for children from disadvantaged backgrounds living in the area.
The school started out with two classes, Grade R and a combined Grade 1 and 2 class, but continuously grew to accommodate pupils up to Grade 7.
In her final year at the school, Indiphile once again impressed the teachers as she was the top Grade 7 academic achiever for 2017.
“She is a very resilient young woman with great academic potential,” a proud Billet said.
Yesterday Indiphile, who would like to become a surgeon one day, officially started high school at DSG and is looking forward to what her new school has to offer.
“I am excited but a bit nervous. I am mostly excited though. I’m looking forward to experiencing new things, meeting new people and getting the best education,” Indiphile said.
