Countdown to Ironman 70.3 in EL

-

WITH Buffalo City only days away from the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa race, excitement is mounting.

The event, set to take place in the city on Sunday January 28, provides 100 coveted slots to the World Championship.

The race promises once again to be one of the most anticipated events of the year with thousands of spectators expected to be part of the festivities, cheering the athletes on along the kilometres of beachfront in a city with a rich cultural history for athletes and tourists to enjoy.

This event marks the perfect curtain raiser for athletes and spectators to get stirred up for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Due to popular demand, this year marks the exciting return of teams to the Buffalo City event, allowing athletes to experience the excitement of racing an Ironman 70.3 with their friends and family as one unit.

Big names are taking part – after dominating the off-road triathlon scene and grabbing the 2017 bragging rights for Xterrra, Bradley Weiss will be fancying his chances of taking the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa title under his name.

But it will not be easy with pros like Evert Scheltinga, Kyle Buckingham and last year’s winner Romain Guillame, who are among just a few top triathletes looking for that top podium finish.

The women’s field also has some excitement of its own. With seven-time champion Jodie Cunnama out of the race after giving birth to her baby boy, the attention will turn to other iron-willed top female pros including Susie Cheetham, who is the favourite to win, and Annah Watkinson, a firm South African favourite.

Do not forget Emma Pallant, who is a top contender.

It will be a tight finish. – Go! reporter
