Almost time for the Trot
Hopes are high for a bumper field
GET ready for the 23rd annual BUCO Tomato Trot and Cycle on February 3 at Lilyfontein School.
Founded in 1995 by three Brakfontein runners – John Brown, Rocco Kruger and Danie Bessinger – along with Ivan Dewing, the popular event started out with only 36 runners. It has grown to such an extent that it now attracts more than 2000 entrants annually.
Participants can choose to run, walk or cycle over various distances including a 5km fun run/walk, 15km run and 55km cycle for those brave enough to attempt it.
Cyclists can also choose between a 35km, 15km or 8km cycle.
The race will see walkers, runners and cyclists meander on a scenic route through the tomato fields and farms of East London, on a mixture of tar, single track and gravel roads.
This year, the Buco Tomato Trot will once again be a #runclean event and therefore, all refreshments will be served in washable plastic cups to protect our local environment.
Looking to attract more entrants, this year the first 2 300 people to register will receive a packet of tomatoes and a race shirt.
Food stalls, refreshments and entertainment will also be provided throughout the day for athletes, spectators and supporters.
Although early bird entries have already closed, enthusiasts can still register for both the run and cycle races on February 2 at Oxford Striders or at Lilyfontein School or on race day at the school. Entry fees vary depending on distance and discipline.
“This is a real fun and healthy day out for the whole family,” one of the organisers, Caroline Kruger, said.
