Double SA victory in Ironman 70.3
THE Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa was a phenomenal event which showcased the beauty of the city to locals and visitors at the weekend.
South Africans Matt Trautman and Jeanni Seymour both secured first position in the respective men’s and women’s categories, with Seymour the first South African woman to win the race in a recordbreaking time of 4:32:23. Trautman also won in a record-breaking time of 4:09:53.
“It was tough but I enjoyed it. I did not have many expectations going into the race as I am far from my usual level of fitness. The run was the hardest with with Bunker’s Hill being a challenge,” said Seymour.
According to Ironman 70.3 SA, this year’s race showed a massive growth of 25% in the participation of women.
In a post-race report released by the organisers, it was indicated that great race conditions had made the event memorable.
“Athletes started off the swim in prime race conditions with a temperature of 18.3°C – and even overcast, rainy early-morning conditions did not stop the sun from coming out in full force, reaching 26°C, making the final stretch tough for the Ironman 70.3 athletes.”
The first 100 athletes to finish secured positions to the Ironman World Championship in September this year with Nelson Mandela Metro as host.
