Join the karting fun-
A NEW, affordable corporate karting series has taken the Eastern Cape by storm.
The simple formula has proved to be hugely popular with local businesses and individuals alike and already 30 karts have been prepared for the series in East London.
The event works in the following format: race days are comprised of two one hour events. Teams have up to four drivers per team, and each driver driving for about 15 minutes in each heat.
Teams are obliged to make a minimum of three pit stops, so that no advantage is gained by teams fielding less than four drivers.
The karts are fitted with affordable four stroke industrial engines, which are cheap to run, and fast enough to thrill while still being safe for beginners.
All engines are sealed by the series promoters, and no modifications are permitted. This ensures close competition while maintaining good reliability.
Because the series is a privately run corporate series, there is no need for special Motorsport competition licences, which is a substantial cost saving for the individual.
Given that four drivers share a kart, the costs of competing are reasonable, while the series has found favour among local businesses, many of which field teams in which management, employees and even clients participate as drivers.
The promoters of the series, Stephen 2 Racing, have karts available for sale, but there is also a rental option available.
Racing takes place at the kart track at the East London Grand Prix Circuit.
Families and friends are encouraged to come and support their teams, with food stalls, jumping castles for kids, braai and bar facilities for spectators.
For the 2018 season the organisers are introducing a ladies race before the main feature race. As the interest grows, they will also be looking at having a “Rookies” race, for drivers who are new to the series.
The first race of the season will be on Sunday February 18. Practice starts at 9am and racing will take place from noon.
There is an admission fee of R10 per person.
