Pradervand to show latest work

- STAFF REPORTER

EAST London-born artist Marc Pradervand will be showcasing his latest paintings in the Tower of Babble exhibition which opens at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, in Southernwood today.

The photographer-turned-painter, who lives and works in the rural hamlet of Riebeeck East in the Eastern Cape, exchanged his camera for a paint brush following an illustrious career as a fashion photographer for publications such as Marie Claire, GQ, Men’s Health, Fair Lady and Leadership.

Most of his work deals with social issues such as violence, power and the abuse thereof and society’s unhealthy obsession with wealth and greed.

He has been an Absa L’Atelier finalist three times and some of his work forms part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum’s permanent collection.

Heavily influenced by quirky South African artists like Walter Battis and East London-born Norman Katherine, the former Cambridge High School pupil’s latest work also draws heavily on the art produced by the Pintupi artists from Papunya in the great Australian Western desert, as well as the abundant San rock art found in the surrounding hills and valleys of the artist’s home town of Riebeeck East.

Renowned art historian Barry Gibb will be delivering the opening speech.

The exhibition runs until March 16.
