Stirling pupils to sparkle on stage
STIRLING High School brings yet another high-quality, large-scale production to the Guild Theatre, in East London this week.
Directed by the school’s drama teacher Marc Williams, this year’s production is the beloved classic Singin’ in the Rain.
“I love the classics and Singin’ in the Rain is such a great, feelgood story with a universal message so it seemed like a great fit for us,” said Williams.
Following the original 1952 film version, the production recounts the Hollywood romance of Don Lockwood (played by Sonqoba Njengele) and Kathy Seldon (played by Hannah Moerdyk and Caitlyn Jones).
Overcoming the challenging world of Hollywood, the two fall in love with the help of Don’s best friend, Cosmo Brown (played by Daniel Anderson), and despite Lina Lamont’s (played by Stirling’s Tanique Allers) demands and schemes.
Starting out in November last year and now taking to the stage, more than 100 pupils – from backstage crews to actors – have been involved in the production.
“Its been quite a process, but the whole team has put in a lot of effort and we’re all really excited about this production,” said Williams.
“The pupils have all been phenomenal and our team has worked really well together.”
From the musical direction and vocal coaching by music gurus Jacques du Plessis and Leoni Johl to choreography by dance teacher Katie Ansel, the iconic songs and energetic production is set to transport audiences to the Golden Age of Hollywood.
“It is always a privilege to be able to do a show of this magnitude and it’s wonderful that this dedication to theatre is such a big part of the school’s ethos,” said Williams.
The show runs until Saturday March 10 and tickets are available from Computicket at R50 for pupils and pensioners and R90 for adults.
