DWAYNE PHARO SHINES AT ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
A FORMER Breidbach Primary School pupil, Dwayne Pharo, who now attends Kingswood College in Grahamstown, is raising eyebrows after his record-breaking feats last weekend in Port Elizabeth.
Pharo rewrote the record books in all his athletics events at the Eastern Cape Provincial Athletics Championships at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University stadium in the city.
The talented athlete competed in the U15 boys 100m, 200m and long jump and gained selection to participate in the national championships scheduled for Potchefstroom from March 21-24..
Pharo set a time of 10.75sec for the 100m, 22.05 for the 200m and jumped a distance of 6.22m in the long jump event.
His father, Wayne, who watched his son destroy his opponents, was over the moon and attributed his son’s success to the training regimen under Olympic champion, Wayde van Niekerk’s coach Tannie Ans Botha in December..
The Go!& Express ran an article at the beginning of the year “Young athlete excited after training with best” after the 14 year-old was offered the opportunity of a lifetime to attend a two-week training course presented by the world-class coach in Bloemfontein.
Van Niekerk is a South African track and field sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400m, He is the current world record holder, world champion and Olympic champion in the 400m (43.03). He also holds the world best time in the 300m (30.81) and his personal best for the 100m is 9.90 and has clocked the 200m in 19.84 seconds.
Dwayne’s dad said: “I’m happy with Dwayne’s overall performance and it was evident that he improved in most departments.
“I was keeping his time myself and recorded 10.62sec for the 100m and I was little bit disturbed with the time of 10.75sec given by the officials but I know he will do better at the next level,” the proud father said.
