Friends rally to raise funds for cancer patient

- MADELEINE CHAPUT

FIGHTING a never-ending battle with stage four breast cancer, 37 year old, Angi Wienekus's only hope is to receive Herceptin treatment – at R18 000 per injection – for the rest of her life.

Herceptin is a drug that can arrest – or stop – breast cancer by blocking Human Epidermal growth factor receptors (HER2).

In order to increase her chances of survival, Angi needs this treatment every three weeks, however, having gone through six months of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and various CT and bone scans, Wienekus’s medical aid is exhausted.

In an effort to raise funds for the treatment, close friends Anne Spinas and Justin Hobbs have organised a family day fundraiser taking place on Saturday from 3pm to 7.30pm at Gonubie Baptist Church.

“Its been an exhausting journey, but I'm not ready to give up yet. My kids need me and I have to keep fighting this,” said Wienekus who is mom to five-year-old, Alex and eight-year-old Hannah.

Wienekus was first diagnosed with stage four breast cancer early in 2016. From there began an emotional roller-coaster which saw Angi unable to walk, losing her hair and physically and emotionally drained. Wienekus’ Build a Burger fundraiser will allow supporters a fun family outing. Face painting, jumping castles, a DJ and live entertainment will be on hand.

Tickets are R100pp and include all the ingredients to build your own burger. For more info, please contact Anne Spinas on 071- 561-5644.
