Day care celebrates 36th birthday party

IT WAS all joy, fun and excitement when Tomorrowland Day Care Centre educators, staff and children celebrated it’s 36th birthday on Thursday last week.

The centre, known to be the oldest day care centre in Buffalo, Flats started out in 1982.

It has a daily educational programme which runs from 8am to 5pm on weekdays offering an educational environment with trained staff.

It accepts children from the ages of 18 months up to six years old.

Dorothy Hammers, who has been working at the centre for 32 years, said: “It has been an experience.

“I love working with children because they challenge me and keep me young.

“What I do is also help people as a day care centre is important in the community to help working parents and the development of a child’s life.”

With 77 children from areas such as Mdantsane, Greenfields, Scenery Park, Braelyn, Parkside and Amalinda, the centre is focused on its goal of educating children with fun activities and playing a role in their growth in a safer and open environment.

“Many children come to the centre unable to speak and here we provide them with a chance to interact with other children and right after a week of being with us, you can see them loosening up and taking part in our activities,” Hammers said.

Parents praised the centre for their sterling work with the kids

"My daughter was always very attached to me. I still remember the first day and many other days, when I dropped her off, it was never easy.

“I am amazed by how she became such an independent little two year old. She has grown in what I feel are the most important areas of development for a toddler. She is more social and her confidence has grown in leaps and bounds," parent Renata Mopp said.

The centre counted the lack of funds and support as one of their main challenges.

She said that anyone who wanted to make a donation can contact the day care centre on: (043) 733-8011.
