Ghandi walk a success
MORE than 1 000 East Londoners participated in the 5km and 12km walk of the 12th annual Gandhi Walk event that took place in Nahoon on Sunday.
Organiser Ashwin Soma said the event started in 2006 with about 500 people and it has grown over the years.
“This year we have managed to attract about 1400 people of whom some even bought last-minute tickets at the gate. This is a walk to bring everyone together and become involved as a community. I was worried about the many events taking place in the city and that the event happen to be in the middle of the month this year,” Soma said.
“However I am surprised at the huge turnout – it shows people are supporting community ventures.”
He added that the walk is organised annually as a fundraiser by the Gandhi Walk Committee (GWC), creating a fun social platform for nation-building and community awareness. It was also a terrific day out for the whole family to enjoy.
“The Gandhi Walk is focused on good health and inspiring a community in working together as one,” he said.
Anre Erasmus, who participated for the second time in the Gandhi Walk, said it was important to take part in community events as they bring back the spirit of unity.
“The message behind this event is important as Gandhi's message was always about peace in the community, as well as unity. We are celebrating his life and reliving his message by taking part in this walk,” she said.
Another participant, Ntombeko Tshabalala, said it was also her second time taking part in the fun walk with her family.
“This year it is different because I am expecting my first child and I want to stay healthy for the delivery. It is also a good way to keep fit, interact and socialise with people in the city,” Tshabalala said.
After the walk, participants were treated to a fun-filled programme with a variety show following the presentations of the trophies and prizes.
