Dog walk raises funds for haven

EAST London’s Pet Pals celebrated their fourth annual dog walk in Quigney on Sunday with the aim of raising funds for a sanctuary for pets.

A total of R8800 was raised in the walk that began at Buccaneers and proceeded to the Wishing Well at the Orient Theatre.

EL Pet Pals was formed by a group of volunteers who saw the need for a shelter for animals where human interaction, exercise and affection in a calm, peaceful environment could be provided.

Secretary, Melany Leach, said the number of stray unwanted animals was on the rise and EL Pet Pals recognised the need for a secondary facility to give animals a second chance.

“Pets are important in the community as they provide companionship. With the support of dog lovers we have managed to give homes to dogs that need it the most and we are continuing to do so.

“Pets do become part of our communities and they need our care,” she said.

Dog walker Mandy Whitehead, who participated in the walk with her dogs Abby and Rosie, said taking dogs for a walk could benefit their health.

“A walk does play a role in a pet’s health with benefits such as assisting in agility.”

Leach said the economic downturn and the lack of sterilisation of dogs and cats in impoverished areas in and around East London were contributing factors to the need for a shelter.

At the Pet Pals’ next event on July 22 at the Emerald Vale Brewery in Chintsa East, a total of R5000, a weekend away and a spa day can be won in the mega draw. Tickets are R20.
