CHILDREN CYCLE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHOC -

- MADELEINE CHAPUT

MORE than 390 young cyclists took up the challenge of the Choc Kids Cycle Event along the Gonubie beachfront on Saturday.

The fun-filled family affair managed to raise more than R30 000 for Choc with children from as young as two, cycling along the coastline as their parents tried to keep up.

Once the little ones had successfully completed their 1.5km or 3km route, it was time for the big kids to cycle their way along the 6km or 10km route.

The day boasted face painting, a jumping castle, a seaside breeze and sunshine.

“It has been such a happy event and we’ve been so lucky with the weather. We could not have picked a more perfect day,” Choc regional manager Debbie Kleinenberg said.

As a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Choc’s fundraising events are its driving force, making the support they receive at events invaluable to the organisation.

At Choc, staff members provide comprehensive support to childhood cancer patients and their families by running various programmes for state and private childhood cancer patients.

Choc is the only organisation nationwide, that provides this kind of all-inclusive care.

While the bulk of Choc's work is done at the paediatric oncology ward at Frere Hospital, Choc also runs two Choc houses in Beacon Bay. T

he funds raised from the Choc Kids Cycle Event will go towards the running costs of the two houses that offer support.

“We are grateful to everyone who has and continues to support us. The success of events such as this are what keeps us going and we are hoping for even more entries next year,” Kleinenberg said.
