KING CHILDREN ENJOY MUSEUM FUN

-

THE Amathole Museum’s education section offered a fascinating and interesting educational opportunity for pupils during the recent school holidays.

The programme, which has been offered for the past 10 years, was attended by children from King William’s Town and the surrounding areas.

Pupils were engaged through activities such as drawing, writing and group discussions.

The programme’s main area of focus was the Big Five – comprising of the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the buffalo, with interesting facts about the animals relayed to the children.

The pupils then had to draw their favourite animal and list what they liked most about it.

There was also a presentation on the Khoisan people, looking at the different cultures of the Khoi (Hottentots) and San (Bushmen) and their hunting methods.

The programme also focused on Xhosa heritage including the growth of a boy to manhood

(Ulwaluko) and the process of a young women entering into married life (Intonjane).

Education officer Gcina Vani taught the pupils some chess on the last day. Playing chess helps pupils to think creatively and strategically.

The museum partnered with the Steve Biko Foundation through Andile Mabombo and museum custodians Nondwe Jack and Ntsiki Dyakopu to make the event a success. – Go! correspondent
