Concert for animals
HILLTOP Animal Outreach will be hosting a concert at the East London Golf Club on Saturday in an effort to raise funds for the group.
Organised by the community-based non-profit organisation String and Whistle, the concert will have some of East London’s top talent grace the stage.
Local bands and musicians such as Serotonin, The Band, QUARK, Bryan Daniel, Kev Taz Fish, Robert Schlimper, John Lawrie, Ed Johnson and Dalena Mostert will be performing.
Hilltop Animal Outreach is a small group of animal lovers, who, in their private capacity focus on helping the desperate and vulnerable animals in townships and squatter camps around East London.
The group work closely with the community to identify animals in need of steriliSation, medical assistance, food, water, bedding and shelter and then ensure that these animals' needs are catered to.
From sterilisation and vaccinations to mange treatment and feeding programmes, the group cater to as many animals as they can on a weekly basis.
“The more we work in and around the more impoverished areas, the more we stumble upon blatant cases of cruelty,” Hilltop Animal Outreach fundraising assistant Jeanie Goodrum said.
“The removal of chains has become almost a weekly activity – many of these poor animals are prevented from accessing water or shelter and we rely solely on the generosity of the public to fund our plight against the neglect and suffering many of these animals face.”
Apart from the much-needed funds, the group is also in need of cat and dog food, blankets, old towels, collars and leads, kennels, rope (to eliminate short wires being used as leashes), ice-cream and margarine containers to be used as food bowls, deworming tablets and tick-and-flea dip.
Tickets to the concert are R100 per person and can be purchased at Lee Gold or at the East London Golf Club.
The evening will kick off at 6pm and a fun auction will also take place. There will be a cash bar and food for sale.

East London folk are urged to take part in Slipper Day – all you need is a R10 wristband to wear your favourite slippers all day.
By participating in Slipper Day, participants will be helping to make true the dreams of life-threatened children.
The R10 wristbands can be brought from any Pick n Pay or Wimpy store or Reach For A Dream branch. Free delivery can be arranged for orders of 100 wristbands or more.
Wearing your R10 wristband and slippers will also get you a free coffee from Wimpy on May 11.
Since 1988, The Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to South African children and their families by offering the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an life-threatening illness.
In 30 years, the Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope to more than 60 000 life-threatened children across South Africa. The foundation discovered an interesting fact about life-threatening illnesses: a larger percentage of children survive than adults.
