EL man tackles 36ONE for a cause
EAST London local Fanie van Biljon will tackle the 36ONE Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge in Oudtshoorn tomorrow in aid of the McClelland Adult Centre.
The race is one of South Africa’s toughest, consisting of a 361km circumnavigation of the Little Karoo and features 5 600m of climbing.
“I aim to complete the race in under 24 hours and, while doing so, raise much-needed funds for the McClelland Adult Centre,” Van Biljon said.
“I'm hoping that my effort will raise awareness for the centre and their fundraising needs.”
The non-profit organisation is a residential and protected workshop facility that caters to the needs of intellectually impaired adults.
It is situated in Amalinda and is home to 70 residents who are accommodated in three hostels and an extended care unit.
Catering to communities from all over the Eastern Cape, including the previously disadvantaged areas in and around the East London and the former Transkei and Ciskei areas, McClelland Adult Centre is the only one of its kind in the area.
“Only 35% of the centre’s running expenses are covered by subsidies. The shortfall is made up from fundraising events throughout the year, of which I hope to be making a small contribution.”
Individuals and companies can support Van Biljon by pledging an amount per kilometre. He has also called on people to make a direct donation to the centre.
