Unilever’s Good Breakfast Programme gives pupils, teachers food for thought

- MATTHEW FIELD

STUDENTS from two Eastern Cape schools won't have to worry about skipping breakfast any time soon after they were awarded gifts to the value of R15000 by Unilever as part of their Rama Good Breakfast Schools Programme.

The four-week programme drew 360 schools across the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, with the aim of imparting to students the importance of starting the day off with breakfast.

This was done through a variety of activities and musician ProVerb even wrote a song for the programme titled The Breakfast Beat.

In order to stand a chance of winning one of the R15000 cash prizes on offer, schools were required to submit weekly reports on their progress, while students had to keep a diary.

On top of the substantial cash prizes, all participating schools were also rewarded with a fridge for their kitchen.

“We are very pleased with the way that the schools and teachers have gotten behind the programme,” Rama Social Mission Brand Manager Sasha Sathianathan said.

“That is why we felt the need to reward those schools who really went the extra mile to ensure the lessons were really valuable to the pupils.”

Duuzani Primary School principal, Nomusa Lushaba, was grateful to Unilever for their support. “Since the pupils started taking part in the Good Breakfast Programme, we have seen improvements in their behaviour as well as their concentration.”
