Lilyfontein celebrate 113 years
LILYFONTEN School held its annual Founder's Day on Friday last week among a throng of pupils present and past, to celebrate 113 years of existence.
During the ceremony, the school promised to focus on the development of traditions.
The school launched a new trophy for any first team cricketer who manages to score 100 runs or more.
The trophy was named after late former pupil Brendon Vorster.
Vorster passed away in a car accident in 2011. During his time at Lilyfontein, he managed to score three centuries (100 runs) with his third being against Elliot High School in 2008. School principal Nic Els said that Vorster started playing at first team level in 2006 and scored the schools first cricket century.
“The memorial trophy for Branden and for other cricketers, is opportunity for a goal to work towards and also to be remembered,” said Els. Vorster’s father collected his son's certificates posthumously. The bat that forms part of the trophy is that of Vorster’s with which he scored his first century.
Past pupils who attended school from as far back as 1939 attended the festivities.
“I’m delighted to see that the school has been beautifully managed, to see so much support,” former pupil Joyce Gaylard said.
The Steel Drum Band playing a lively piece called Wamkelekile (You Are Welcome), while The Grade 1s and Grade 12s also sang Happy Birthday Guest speaker, Anne-Lise Bollaert-Davies, encouraged pupils to never give up.
“With grit, courage, determination and a positive attitude, you can live your adventure to the full,” Bollaert-Davies said.
The school continues to grow as it plans to have additional staff to cater for extra pupils and coaches for sports.
They will also enhance facilities already available to the pupils in specialised subjects such as engineering graphics and design, hospitality studies, computer rooms and their unique Adventure Centre.
