Stirling provides a sound foundation
STIRLING High School has become one of the leading co-educational high schools in the country and supports the classical educational philosophy of a child active in all four spheres of personal development – academic, physical, cultural and pastoral.
This holistic education approach is threaded throughout the school’s vision of excellence and happiness in the hope that each member of our community will find fulfilment in the space we create.
Between 1985 and last year, Stirling awarded honours cum laude blazers (for selection to a national team or its equivalent achievement) 585 times in 48 different codes, averaging more than 20 South African representatives per annum over the past five years.
Most of these have been in the fields of hockey, swimming, drum majorettes, jazz, surfing, tennis, water polo, oratory, academic research/olympiads, biathlon and dance.
The provincial education department regards Stirling as one of the top academic schools in the Eastern Cape, with particular success in commercial subjects, and a significant number of Stirling pupils have gone on to become chartered accountants and business leaders.
We enjoy close ties with Stirling Primary, whose motto is “Where Happiness and Excellence Meet” – a summary of the approach to a holistic education we share.
The successes of past pupils reflect a sound foundation at school and some of the recent past pupil successes include: Dr David Favara, who is studying at Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship; Dr Kyle O’Hagan ,a postdoctoral fellow after a PhD at Northwestern University on a Fulbright scholarship; Tim Agaba, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics as a member of the Springbok Sevens team; Carly Wessels, captain of the SA Women’s water polo team; Sinalo Jafta, who currently plays in the Protea Women’s cricket team; Siya Makuzeni, awarded Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz in 2016; and Dan and Sam Burger who are reaching national success with their band Opposite the Other.
