Events help sup­port kids with down syn­drome

AS PART of a fundrais­ing ini­tia­tive, Down Syn­drome As­so­ci­a­tion Amath­ole had a steak evening event at the Hamil­ton Sports Club on Fri­day.

Branch di­rec­tor Denise Tay­lor said they did var­i­ous fundrais­ing events dur­ing the course of the year to raise funds for the as­so­ci­a­tion in or­der to con­tinue op­er­at­ing.

“We also use these op­por­tu­ni­ties to cre­ate aware­ness among the gen­eral pub­lic and those at­tend­ing the evening can meet some of our Down Syn­drome Self Ad­vo­cates and wit­ness their love of mu­sic and danc­ing,” she said.

The as­so­ci­a­tion, which also aims to im­prove the qual­ity of life for those with down syn­drome, also pro­vides an out­reach and sup­port pro­gramme at Frere Hospi­tal on a Wed­nes­day and at Ce­cilia Maki­wane Hospi­tal on a Tues­day.

“We mainly op­er­ate out­side the of­fice by dis­tribut­ing in­for­ma­tion to new par­ents on the birth of their child and sup­port­ing the fam­ily by way of coun­selling, as well as dis­tribut­ing in­for­ma­tion on down syn­drome to clin­ics and hos­pi­tals,” Tay­lor said.

She added that a raf­fle was done on the evening with a lucky win­ner walk­ing away with a R1000 prize.

The next fundrais­ing event will be a 5km fun run on July 21 – spon­sored by BUCO. All are in­vited to join and sup­port this wor­thy cause.
