Gulu Trail entry triples

- SIPHOKAZI VUSO

ADVENTURE runners took on nature in the fourth annual Gulu Trail at Farm 19 over the weekend.

The event was hosted by the Nedbank Running Club East London.

“It is a tough technical trail that involves crossing rivers at least four times [although these were dry because of the drought].

“There were also some steep uphills and downhills, as well as dark tunnels because of the overhanging trees,” Running Club East London chairperson Edwin Donald Frauenstein said.

The event saw 186 entrants, triple the number of participants who took part last year, take on a 2km Kiddies Nature Walk, and a 4km and 10km Trail Run.

Most of the entrants participated in the 10km and the first 100 finishers in the 10km each received a medal.

The top runners received gold, bronze and silver medals. The 4km race took place on Farm 19, while the 10km crossed over to a another farm.

“In comparison to many local races, we gave away a higher allocation of prize money. R1,000 for first, R700 for second, and R500 for third. This was for both top three male and female finishers, thus R4,400 in total.

“This was sponsored by Regent Brick and Block,” Frauenstein said.

A portion of the profits were donated to Friends of Gulu, which is involved with nature conservation in the area. The final results were: Male top three in the 10km: 1 Edumisa Mtoli – Nedbank Running Club

2 Mndeni Zulu – Oxford Striders

3 Doran Fritz – Nedbank Running Club East London

Female top three in the 10km

1 Andrea Ranger – Easy Equities Born2Run EL 2 Rebekah Anderson 3 Sandiswa Kundulu – All Stars
