46th bowls clash

It will be crunch time for King William’s Town bowlers this weekend when the annual Mini-Districts Bowls Tournament takes to the greens in Komani.

Bowlers from King William’s Town who will represent the Ciskei sub-union are Tinus Terblanche, Barry Hayidakis, Francois van Tonder, Piet Jacobs and Brian McLean.

The other players, who are from Kidd’s Beach, are Roy Taylor (formerly from King), another ex-Kingite Tony Elliott and Stan Cawthorne.

Elliott, who will double up as team manager, said he expected the Ciskei teams to do well.

“There are two good teams which hopefully should be able to hold their own in the competition.

“The defending champions are Frontier, who will have home advantage, but as you know, things change from year to year,” he said.

President of the Frontier Bowls Association, Gerrie Marais, said they looked forward to hosting the 46th men’s inter-sub-district tournament.

“Braai packs will be on sale every night at the club and the club also has a very good and reasonably priced kitchen menu, if players wish to order anything else to eat.”

While bowlers battle it out in Komani, four players will head to KwaZulu-Natal the same weekend to represent Border at a national under 30 tournament in Pietemaritzburg.

The four are Conrad Potgieter and Tarquin Ormston, Tyler Pitcher and Dale schoolboy Josh Turner.

“I can’t wait for the weekend to arrive and am really looking forward to the challenge Pietermaritzburg presents,” Turner said.

The Komani tournament starts with a welcome ceremony at midday on Friday at the Queenstown Golf Club.

This will be followed by one game on Friday afternoon, two on Saturday, two on Sunday and one on Monday morning.
