A sporting chance
Tournament to be ‘tonic’ for the youth
Three local sports enthusiasts and former football players have taken it upon themselves to bring a change to social ills and the high rate of crime which has plagued their community in Tshatshu.
Thanduxolo Breakfast, Zandisile Gcwili and Loyiso Tshatshu believe sport is the perfect tonic to change their community for the better and have decided to stage a two-day crime awareness tournament.
The event, supported by stakeholders – such as dignitaries from SAPS, departments of correctional services and social development, as well as Buffalo City Safa – will include a fun walk, aerobics, and soccer for juniors, seniors and masters, as well as netball.
“There will also be an ex-offender to address the youth, jumping castles for the kids and a DJ to keep the vibe alive,” Breakfast said.
“We all played soccer and were passionate about sport and that has triggered us to come up with this great initiative.
“Sport was the only tool in our community moulding people’s behaviour and we are what we are and who we are today because of sport. With this event we are hoping to restore the youth’s enthusiasm for sport.”
Gcwili said drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and crime have taken over which resulted in disrespect for the elderly and total lawlessness.
Donations were received from Vuvu Puti and local individuals and they are still knocking on the doors for more contributions.
“All participants of the fun walk will receive a T-shirt and there are trophies for the winners,” Tshatshu said.
“We want to unite our community by bringing together everyone in an effort to restore dignity and capacitating our young generation to root out all bad habits and social ills through sport.”
Breakfast said the event is scheduled for December 16 to 17 at the Tshatshu Sports Grounds.
