Needy expectant moms in spotlight

- AMANDA NANO

Non-profit organisation Breath of Life hosted a fundraiser at Abbotsford Christian Church on Saturday in a bid to involve the community in their work and highlight their cause.

A silent auction and lots of prizes from generous donors were up for grabs in the event themed “Celebrating God's Love”.

House mother Michelle Rielly said one of their key services was to provide support to mothers who unexpectedly find themselves giving birth alone.

“We have mothers who come as far as Sterkspruit who come for check-ups then find themselves having to give birth unexpectedly. This mother has no form of support and no clothes for the baby.

“We have newborn starter kits available at Cecelia Makhiwane Hospital (CMH) in Mdantsane,” Rielly said.

The newborn starter kit includes a parenting book, booties, hat, clothes and blanket for the baby.

Executive mentor Lorraine Govender emphasised the importance of “working and living a purposeful life”.

CMH doctor Phumza Nongena said it had 12 neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) beds and also allowed for mother's to stay for an extended period while their premature babies grow.

The NPO works closely with CMH, Frere Hospital and Empilweni Gompo Health Centre. The organisation also works with abandoned babies.

“The best moment is giving a baby to their forever family and we're are privileged to be part it.” Rielly said.

The home has seven babies in their care who will benefit from more than R15,000 raised from the event.
