- SIVENATHI GOSA

The Eastern Cape Super 12 Rugby League continued this weekend with seven matches being played across the province on Saturday.

The East London Police Rugby Club hosted Humansdorp-based Kruisfontein Rugby Club, where the Police Rugby Club claimed a victory of 24-16.

The Buffalo Rugby Team travelled to Port Elizabeth to face Park Rugby Club, and suffered a major loss at 33-14.

Berlin Tigers took on a Komani-based Breakers Rugby Football Club and won 5-0. The Old Selbornians lost against Star of Hope 20-10.

Berlin Tigers coach Leo Mbini said in 2018’s season, they only managed to reach the quarterfinals, but in 2019 they are gunning to become the champions.

“I was not happy with performance we produced last year because it looked like my players were just happy being part of the league.

“This year I have made it clear to the boys that we need to up our game, and go as far as the semifinals,” he said.

Mbini said their first game of the season against Breakers in Komani was interesting until it was called off due to unforeseen reasons.

“This year we mean business. I know we are a small team from a small township compared to others, but our goal is to win games this season.

“The boys are hungry and they are all ready for any team they face,” Mbini said.

On Saturday, the league will continue with Old Selbornians travelling to Port Elizabeth to face the PE SAPS at Kernsley Park. Kick-off is at 3.30pm.
