Take part in charity fun to fight polio

- SIVENATHI GOSA

Take part in the fun-filled Bigfoot & Rotary Polio Challenge this Friday at the BUCO Astro Park in Bunkers Hill and support the fight to end polio worldwide.

Gately Rotary and Bigfoot Express Freight have collaborated to bring the charity fun run to life in aid of supporting this worthy cause.

“Polio is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease, yet totally unknown to most South Africans. In 1985, Rotary International took a momentous decision to tackle polio eradication worldwide through the mass vaccination of children,” fun run organiser, Gerrie Hattingh, said.

“The purpose of this event is to raise funds and build awareness about the disease for locals.

“We want to improve lives, invest in the future, improve child health, save money and to make history,” he said.

Hattingh said over the past 30 years, Rotary International has helped immunise more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries, spending over $1.8bn (about R25bn) towards eradicating polio .

"The first polio run was organised by Gately Rotary in 2016 and the aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle and to raise further funds for the Polio Eradication Fund.

“This year will be more special as every participant can buy a cancer armband and for each armband sold, the proceeds will go to the Cancer Association of South Africa [Cansa]," Hattingh said.

Hattingh said they were hoping to receive between 750 and 1,000 entries this year.

Those interested can enter at Sportsmans Warehouse for a fee of R70. The race starts at 5.30pm.
