‘Nightflyer’ fails to live up to promising hype

starts out so Nightflyers promising.

Firstly, it’s based on a novel by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, so you know the foundation is going to be solid.

Secondly, the opening scene is absolutely gripping and does a great job of making you want to see this story through.

Unfortunately, the rest of the series doesn’t really live up to its own hype.

The story revolves around the crew of the titular spaceship Nightflyer as they travel deep into space to try and make contact with a mysterious alien life form. However, things quickly begin to unravel the closer they get and soon the crew has to battle not just each other but their own growing madness.

Already, there’s great potential here and it’s easy to draw comparisons to other great films.

You have the cosmic horror of Event Horizon, the elusive aliens of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and there’s even a scene in episode nine that is a clear call-back to Stanley Kubrik’s The Shining.

Sadly, Nightflyers doesn’t quite live up to the potential of its predecessors although there’s a lot good about it, in the beginning.

The ensemble cast does a good job, the set design is delightfully claustrophobic, and while the mystery is kept up, the story is engaging.

Unfortunately, things start to fall apart once certain revelations start coming and by the end, you’re left feeling rather underwhelmed by it all.

All in all, Nightflyers is an average-bordering-ongood experience, but if you’re looking for something more substantial, there are plenty of better options out there.
