Karting Championship comes to roaring end

Final held at EL Grand Prix Track

- GO REPORTER

On a blustery December 5, Border Karting held their sixth and final round of the 2020 Championship at the EL Grand Prix Track.

Bambino Class

Arabelle Krause caused an upset by winning the day in fine style from Traiton Boshoff and Jason du Preez. Traiton amassed a huge points lead thoughout the year to secure the 2020 title long before the end of the season, ahead of Krause and du Preez.

Minirok

Onwabile Mcinga had a good day, first securing pole position and then winning the first heat. He was later reeled in by Redd Scholtz who won the second and third heats, relegating Mcinga to second place for the day, ahead of Myles Krause and Traiton Boshoff. Schotz finished the championship in second place ahead of Boshoff in third.

Micro Max

Lincoln Randall and Tyler Stephen had a closely fought championship throughout the year. Going into round 6, only three points separated them which meant that each driver needed to win at least two of the three heats. That is exactly what Randall did, taking heat 1 and heat 2. Stephen's win in the third heat was just not enough to topple Randall, who is now the 2020 champion in this class.

125 Senior Clubmans

Ryan Gudmans drove a storming race to take the overall win from a hard charging Jacques du Preez, who drove a sensible race to bank sufficient points to clinch the 2020 Championship in this class.

Jono Stephen took the last place on the podium for the day, but Ethan Springfield proved yet again that consistency is key in any championship, by taking a well deserved second place for 2020 in his first year of competition.

Third place went to Ryan Gudmans, despite missing two events during the year.

The Driver of the day award went to Onwabile Mcinga

Masters Clubmans 125

Geoff Stephen was back to his winning ways, taking all three heats on the day, but it was not enough to make up for the races missed in the latter part of the season as far as the overall championship standings were concerned. Greg Thompson had another good day taking second place ahead of championship winner Leeroy Randall who, like Jacques du Preez, was driving a sensible race keeping out of trouble to ensure the 2020 championship win.

Rotax DD2

Greg Thompson, took a popular pole position from Geoff Stephen and Jono Stephen, and then went on to win heat 1. All came good for Geoff who won heat 2 and 3, winning the day from a determined Thompson in second with Jono finishing up third. Jono amassed sufficient points to give him the 2020 title ahead of Geoff, with Thompson pipping a luckless Jacques du Preez to third by just two points.

4 Stroke Masters Clubmans

Ashley Mylie qualified on pole for Masters and proceeded to win all three heats ahead of Greg Thompson and Andre Shreir. However, it was not enough to be able to wrestle the championship away from winner Thompson, and runner-up Shreir. Mylie finished in third place for the year.

4 Stroke Seniors Clubmans

Bryce Choudree once again delivered a sterling performance to win the day ahead of Derek Pratt in second spot, with Leeroy Randall in third. Randall again took the pragmatic approach, securing himself sufficient points to take the win in the championship by just six points from Pratt. Pratt s daughter

’ Calsey-Ann, joined the field and finished fifth for the day.

4 Stroke Academy Seniors

Ashtyn Collins impressed with three wins ahead of second-place winner Joshua Coetzer and Allison Rheeders in third. Aphele Majavu finished fourth.

4 Stroke Academy Juniors

Jordan du Preez once again claimed the top spot ahead of Jayden Meise, with Rebecca van der Westhuizen in third. Rafiq Poovan finished fourth. Funnily enough, that is the same finishing order as the 2020 overall championship.

The Driver of the day award went to Onwabile Mcinga, while Marshall of the Day award went to Oybonga Zenzile
