Locally produced film The Queenstown Kings, which shot to the number one spot on Netflix, showcases the best of Eastern Cape talent including East London’s own Unathi Platyi, Likhona Mgali and Inganathi Mtshizana.

The Queenstown Kings was released on Netflix on November 17.

The story follows a prodigious young soccer player named Fezile (played by Mgali) from rural Queenstown (Komani), as he is faced with the return of his estranged, pro-footballer father, Buyile (played by seasoned Eastern Cape actor Zolisa Xaluva) and the choice between his team’s success and chasing his own dreams.

Mgali, a pupil at Sandisiwe High School in Mdantsane, said playing the lead role was difficult at first, but with the guidance and support of fellow lead Xaluva, he grew in the role.

He said the experience had helped him get a foot in the industry and he looked forward to pursuing a career in acting.

Mgali said he had a lot in common with his character, which made playing the role enjoyable.

He described Fezile as an independent and strong young person who believed he could do anything without having to rely on help from others.

Stirling High School pupil Mtshizana, said the response from viewers had been overwhelming. “In my high school, everyone has become a soccer fan, especially in the predominantly black areas.

“We have become superstars as the movie resonates more with the Xhosa language,” Mtshizana said.

“The reception has been very humbling. People in taverns, high school kids, and senior citizens have also watched the film and are very excited for us.

“As an actor, that’s the gratification we look for. You want your audience to feel part of the story.

“Everyone is asking for The Queenstown Kings 2.”

The film also became an instant social media hit, with fans creating videos using the catchphrase “Omnyekomnye, masambebhuti!”, made famous by Platyi’s character, coach Fana Gigaba.

“That line wasn’t in the script,” Platyi said.

”I took inspiration from my own background in sport and watching coaches in American movies.

“I sat down with the director and we came up with something.

“I am very happy with how the Eastern Cape has shown the movie so much love and with its success, especially for the young actors who are new to the industry. We hope it will open more doors for us.”
