Talented cricket allrounder Cayleigh Wanckel is climbing the sports ranks, while flying Stirling High School’s flag high with her extraordinary abilities.

Wanckel, 14, plays for the school’s U15A boys’ team and was selected as captain this year.

Spreading her wings in the sport, she also received Border women’s colours in December.

As a rising young star, her dream is to earn a place in the national cricket team.

“I started playing cricket when I was in grade 3. I just played with the boys at school during break time,” she said.

Wanckel says that her family had always been interested in the sport.

“I really love the sport and I do see a future for myself in it.

“It was one of my biggest goals to become a captain of the boys’ side, and I am very proud of myself for getting this role,” Wanckel said.

“The relationship I have with the team is great; I am looking forward to the future.”

Wanckel said she was introduced to Border cricket by a friend’s father.

“From there the coach invited me for a session with the women’s team,” she said.

“He got me involved with Border U19. It was the middle of 2023 when the coach recognised my potential and asked that I attend a session with the women.”

School coach Grant

Lombard said he started working with her in 2023 when she came to Stirling.

“From the first practice, she had enthusiasm and a love for the game, and good skill levels for someone her age.”

Lombard described Wanckel’s bowling and batting skills and technique as rare.

“She is a spin bowler and her ability at her age is quite rare.”

Lombard said Wanckel earned the captaincy because she was extremely talented and committed, and got along very well with other players.

“I think if she continues to work hard and enjoy the game she will go far,” he said.

“The fact that she is playing senior women’s cricket at this

age is quite rare. There is no limit to what she can achieve.

“She can play for the national team with her skills.”
