Popular East London bands to rock night away at Old Boys

- FAITH MTWANA

On Saturday May 18, East London partygoers are invited to the Old Boys Club where two popular bands will be performing.

The Elevators and Tommy and the Toe Jammers will be taking the stage to perform a mixture of popular song covers and some original songs, keeping everyone on the dance floor.

The Elevators consists of band members Themi Cooras, Cheryl Minkley and Quinn Maritz on guitar, vocals, bass and drums. They have been playing together as a three-piece rock band since the late 1980s.

“All members are actively involved in supporting local music and have played an important role in getting East

London onto the itineraries of national touring bands and artists such as Arno Carstens, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky and most recently, the Congo Cowboys,” Minkley said.

Tommy and the Toe Jammers is made up of five band members: Jamie Atterbury, Dylan Durant, Ray Smith, Micheal Gatcke and Kayleigh Matsicas.

Ironically, none of the members are named Tommy. Durant, vocalist and guitarist of the group, says that while the name is random, the group is committed to playing music that allows people to have a good time.

“Tommy and the Toe Jammers popped into my head. As it turns out, there was a band in the late 1980s fronted by the late Tommy Lawson, so somewhere there had been a connection. We are a 100% good vibes music band. We play music that makes us feel good and we hope that it translates into a ‘good vibes’ audience experience.”

While the two groups have something different to offer, audiences are guaranteed to have a fun-filled musical evening.

“We’ve never taken the easy way out by playing flavour of the month covers. We endeavour to bring something fresh and new to any audience. We look forward to entertaining the audience without high octane set,” Cooras said.

The event will take place at Old Boys Club at 7.30pm. Tickets are R100 per person. The bar will have drinks specials and the Lookout Kitchen will be open until 8.30pm.
