MUST-HAVES FOR THE KITCHEN

• Tableware Large and small plates, bowls (for cereal and dessert), enough coffee mugs and teacups, and glasses for water and wine.

• Dishes A salad bowl, one or two (ovenproof) dishes, at least one mixing bowl and a steel or aluminium dish for braai meat.

• Cutlery Knives, forks, tablespoon­s, teaspoons and large serving spoons.

• Knives A bread knife and at least two sharp knives for peeling and chopping. (Sharpen them regularly!)

• Cookware At least two saucepans and a frying pan.

• Tools Kitchen scissors, tin and bottle openers, a whisk, a spatula, a potato peeler, a grater, a colander, a cutting board and oven gloves.

• Toaster Not essential, but your guests will love it.

• Cleaning A broom, a mop, a dustpan and brush, a bucket and generalpur­pose cleaner.

• Braai A grid and tongs.

• Ironing An iron and an ironing board.
