go! Platteland

The Morning Trade in Durban is a must on a Sunday morning

Durbanites know where to go on a Sunday morning when they feel like fresh and homemade food: The Morning Trade, an artisan market in the trendy Station Drive precinct.

There’s not much anyone can teach former chef and selfconfessed gourmand Anna Savage about markets.

Anna is the founder and owner of the popular I Heart Market, held on the first Saturday of every month at Moses Mabhida Stadium for the past nine years. Four years ago she realised people who live in central Durban had far less choice when it came to fresh, honest, home-made, local speciality foods (especially if they don’t want to shop in an impersonal mall) than those in, say, the KwaZuluNatal platteland. For Anna there was only one logical solution: start a food market.

Now, on Sunday mornings, walkers, joggers, cyclists, swimmers, surfers, families, health nuts and lovers of good food flock to the Station Drive precinct – where more and more creatives are working – for coffee, breakfast, all sorts of fresh and preserved delights, fresh bread and other baked goods, takeaways for lunch or just a good catch-up session.

Further bonuses: on Sundays there is more than enough parking for everyone; the venue is nice and compact; there aren’t too many stalls; and the traders all take real pride in their products.

The whole affair is fun and chilled – much like Durban itself.

• The market is held every Sunday from 09:00 to 13:00.
