Nicholas Zulu

Sand sculptor Nicholas is 26 years old and cycles from Dukuduku every day to build sand sculptures on the main beach at St Lucia. He’d gone to Durban to learn from a Nigerian man how to make them, but Nicholas decided to return to St Lucia, “because there are just too many people doing this kind of thing in Durban”.

When Platteland visited, we found the Big Five on the beach. “It took me about five days to complete,” Nicholas said. “The hippo was the most difficult.” He receives up to R500 in donations every day in December, but when things are quiet he is lucky if he makes R100. He loves his work, though: “I meet new people every day!”
