Quiet af­ter the har­vest­ing storm

I took this photo at Somersver­driet farm along the N7 more or less be­tween Moor­rees­burg and Piket­berg, shortly af­ter the wheat had been har­vested. The moun­tain on the left is called the Swart­berg, and it looks par­tic­u­larly dark in this pic­ture be­cause it was al­most com­pletely dev­as­tated by a fire in 2016 (the first to oc­cur there in al­most 80 years). But the veld tends to ap­pear darker in the Swart­land than else­where be­cause of the re­gion’s unique – and highly threat­ened – renos­ter­veld. Read more about this at Swart­land Botan­ics. >
