WHO ARE THE SANPARKS HONORARY RANGERS?

-

National Chairman, Louis Lemmer, explains: “We’re men and women who are passionate about nature and who use our skills and influence for the benefit of South Africa’s national parks. Some members organise fundraising events; others help out at the rest camps and gates during peak season. There’s even an engineer who is currently busy drawing up plans for all of the Kruger Park’s bridges – plans that didn’t exist until now. “It’s not about privileges or prestige, but about a willingness to serve. Our 1 500-odd members are true volunteers and our role is to scratch where SANParks is itching. “We are always happy to welcome new members with the right attitude and a dedication to the cause.”

How does it work? A minimum of six and a maximum of eight guests join three SANParks guides for a three-night bush-camping and walking experience. Guests leave from Mopani at about 2 pm on a Thursday and follow the guides to the unfenced campsite. Departure is on Sunday morning, after a short early morning activity. The camp is closed from December to February when it’s too hot and wet.

Do I need a 4x4? No, but you need reasonable clearance to cross the dry stream in front of the camp. Bush trailers and bush caravans are allowed, but not normal caravans.

What facilities are there in camp? The camp has no electricity, but there are long drops, bucketshower cubicles and a basin (no water). A braai grid is also provided.

What must I take? Guests must be completely self-sufficient. Take your own tent or bush trailer/ caravan, gazebo, camping fridge or cool box (must be able to stay cold for three days), food, bucket shower and water – at least 30 litres per person. Generous picnic breakfasts are provided on days two and three. Also take comfortable hiking shoes, a small daypack for snacks and water, a hat, sunscreen and a camera. Try to pack clothes in neutral colours.

How far do you walk? Morning walks are longer (5 – 10 km, up to five hours); afternoon walks are shorter (2 – 4 km, up to two hours). The rest of the day you spend relaxing in camp. Guests may not go on game drives in their personal vehicles or drive to Mopani to buy things at the shop.

What does it cost? R2 450 per person (minimum of six people).

How do I book? Well in advance! Send an e-mail to bushcamps@ honoraryrangers.org or visit sanparksvolunteers.org for more info.
