How to get there?

The CapeNature office at Ouplaas is about 7 km from Fontein Guest Farm.

Conservati­on fee:

Entrance is free with a Wild card, otherwise it’s R40 per adult and R20 per child aged 3 – 12.

Things to do:

• Cycle. Bring your mountain bike or hire one from the reception office (R50 for a full day; R30 for half a day). • Fish. Plant your fishing rod next to the Gamka River. Bring your fishing permit or buy one at the office (R40 per person). • Hike. There are two great trails: Grootkloof (6,3 km; starts near the campsite; buy a guide for R15 at the reception office) and Koningsgat (1,4 km; starts near the Bush Shelter). Once you’re done walking, have a dip in the Gamka River. • Watch birds. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in the kloof – even fish-eagles! Bring your binos and your bird guide.

Where to stay?

CapeNature has several self-catering options. Book in advance if you can, but they will accommodat­e you on the day if there are stands or units available. Enquire about discounts, especially in winter. • Camping: There are 10 stands. Each stand has solar-powered lights, braai facilities, a tap and a picnic table (no power). The ablution blocks have hot water. Bring your own firewood. R150 per stand for up to six people. • Bush Shelter: Basic accommodat­ion in a dormitory with single beds and mattresses for up to 12 guests. Bring your own bedding. The kitchen has a gas stove, fridge and cutlery. There are braai facilities and two bathrooms with hot water. R380 per night for the first four people; plus R90 per extra person. • Houses: There are 11 renovated cottages that once belonged to residents of the kloof. The units vary in size, from twin-sleeper Stappies Cordier (R500 per night) and three-sleeper Schoolmast­er’s House (R500 per night for two people, plus R200 for the third person) to the six-sleeper Snyman Huis (R800 per night for the first four, plus R200 per extra person) and eight-sleeper Sankie Marais (R880 per night for the first four, plus R200 per extra person).
