How to get there?

The Cape­Na­ture of­fice at Ou­plaas is about 7 km from Fon­tein Guest Farm.

Con­ser­va­tion fee:

En­trance is free with a Wild card, oth­er­wise it’s R40 per adult and R20 per child aged 3 – 12.

Things to do:

• Cy­cle. Bring your moun­tain bike or hire one from the re­cep­tion of­fice (R50 for a full day; R30 for half a day). • Fish. Plant your fish­ing rod next to the Gamka River. Bring your fish­ing per­mit or buy one at the of­fice (R40 per per­son). • Hike. There are two great trails: Grootk­loof (6,3 km; starts near the camp­site; buy a guide for R15 at the re­cep­tion of­fice) and Kon­ings­gat (1,4 km; starts near the Bush Shel­ter). Once you’re done walk­ing, have a dip in the Gamka River. • Watch birds. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in the kloof – even fish-ea­gles! Bring your bi­nos and your bird guide.

Where to stay?

Cape­Na­ture has sev­eral self-cater­ing op­tions. Book in ad­vance if you can, but they will ac­com­mo­date you on the day if there are stands or units avail­able. En­quire about dis­counts, es­pe­cially in win­ter. • Camp­ing: There are 10 stands. Each stand has so­lar-pow­ered lights, braai fa­cil­i­ties, a tap and a pic­nic ta­ble (no power). The ablu­tion blocks have hot water. Bring your own fire­wood. R150 per stand for up to six peo­ple. • Bush Shel­ter: Ba­sic ac­com­mo­da­tion in a dor­mi­tory with sin­gle beds and mat­tresses for up to 12 guests. Bring your own bed­ding. The kitchen has a gas stove, fridge and cut­lery. There are braai fa­cil­i­ties and two bath­rooms with hot water. R380 per night for the first four peo­ple; plus R90 per ex­tra per­son. • Houses: There are 11 ren­o­vated cot­tages that once be­longed to res­i­dents of the kloof. The units vary in size, from twin-sleeper Stap­pies Cordier (R500 per night) and three-sleeper School­mas­ter’s House (R500 per night for two peo­ple, plus R200 for the third per­son) to the six-sleeper Sny­man Huis (R800 per night for the first four, plus R200 per ex­tra per­son) and eight-sleeper Sankie Marais (R880 per night for the first four, plus R200 per ex­tra per­son).
