Petrel alert
Archway Bay
Chris took this photo of a southern giant petrel stalking through a crèche of king penguin chicks, searching for weak individuals to prey on. Giant petrels are the vultures of the Southern Ocean: huge, aggressive predators and scavengers with a complete lack of eating manners. The old seal hunters who visited the Prince Edward Islands called them “stinkers”, “gluttons” or “nellies”.
