TRANQUILLITY SAFARI LODGE & SPA

-

There’s something about an infinity pool – even if you’re several provinces away from Clifton – that instantly makes you breathe out. Or is it just me? At this aptly named spot, the pool falls away into the Bushveld where there’s a small waterhole frequented by giraffe, kudu and other animals. The lodge caters to the whole family. Mom and daughter can get pampered while dad and the boys head out into the bush (and vice versa!). Spa treatments take place in a safari tent with roll-up sides so you feel surrounded by nature (massages start at R495; book in advance). A game drive costs R220 – you’ll go into neighbouring Welgedacht Private Game Reserve, which is home to the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary. Facilities: There are five spacious chalets and three smaller and more rustic bush-camp rooms for those who enjoy camping, but don’t feel like pitching a tent. The bush-camp rooms each have an en suite bathroom and share kitchen facilities. There are also a handful of camping stands with power points. The restaurant on the premises is the only one for miles around and thankfully it caters to diverse tastes. The pizza I ordered was great (from R65). Niggles? The chalets are close together and have very small braai facilities. The smoke from your coals will mingle with your neighbours’ – and you might have to mingle, too. If mingling is not your scene, head to the restaurant. Also, the road from the lodge to the nearest gate into the DGR (15 km) is badly corrugated. How to get there: Take the Zambezi Drive/Sefako Makgatho exit (R513) off the N1 and turn left onto the R573 towards KwaMhlanga. After about 27 km, turn left onto the gravel Hammanskraal Road. At the first fork you come to, keep right. Continue to the security gate and call Hennie de Wet ( 084 508 3491). Note: You might not have signal at this point so I’d recommend calling from the tar road to give Hennie a heads-up that you’re on your way. Once you’re through the gate, the road forks again. Keep right and follow the signs. Rates: Chalets from R495 per person; bush-camp rooms R395 per person. Contact: 084 508 3491 (Hennie); tranquillityspalodge.co.za
