WAGONDRIFT LODGE

-

I arrived at WagonDrift as the sun was setting and promptly interrupted a dazzle of zebra grazing outside my chalet. They politely moved off so I could unpack, light a fire and pour a sundowner. I didn’t see them again, but I could hear them rustling in the bush. This made me feel like I was deep in a game reserve, even though WagonDrift is technically outside the borders of the DGR – a bonus, in a way, because it means you can walk or ride your bike along the network of gravel roads on the property. There’s a jungle gym for the kids and even puzzles, toys and storybooks to keep them busy. Facilities: The chalets and cottages are arranged in a semi-circle, set back from the main lodge building. There are two family cottages (each sleeping four) and five luxury chalets (sleeping two), all of which are modern and spacious – you won’t spend the weekend tripping over your loved ones. Niggles? The braai facilities at the chalets are just baby Webers shared between units. There are better communal braai facilities at the main lodge. The “kitchens” in the chalets also seem like an afterthought: There’s no tea, coffee, salt or pepper – and no sink. You have to fill the kettle in the bathroom. How to get there: Take the Zambezi Drive/Sefako Makgatho exit (R513) from the N1 and turn left towards KwaMhlanga (R573). After about 43 km you’ll see the Moloto Big Tree Shopping Mall. Another kilometre further and you’ll come to a four-way stop before Moloto itself. Stop here and let WagonDrift know you’re en route (there’s no cell signal at the gate). Turn left at the four-way stop and drive 7 km towards Rust de Winter. Turn left onto the dirt road at the signboard and right a kilometre further. Follow this road over a cattle grid and take the first small turn to the left. The sign says “private” but it’s the right one. Phew, you made it! Rates: Family cottage from R1 225 per night; chalet from R700. Enquire about specials and discounts – they have several options especially for repeat visitors.
