WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN DINOKENG

-

Most of the lodges and guesthouses in the park are self-catering so stock up before you arrive. The so-called “Safari Mall” close to the Tau gate only stocks the basics. There’s a liquor store on the premises with a limited range. You can fill up with petrol, though, and there’s an ATM.

Arlington Brewery

A brewery in a reserve? Genius! Sit outside under the cooling spray system and sip a Bushveld Bliksem Lager brewed on site by David Hutchinson. Also try his Bandit Mongoose Shandy, Red Hartebees Ale or Boris the Buffalo Stout. It’s not just about beer. Their burgers are the real deal, as are their pizzas made in an old VW Beetle that has been converted into an oven. Opening times: Wednesday to Friday from 11 am to 8 pm; Saturday to 9 pm; Sunday to 2 pm. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It’s packed over weekends so book in advance if you want a table. Directions are on the website. Contact: 082 494 7521; arlingtonbeer.co.za

The Lazy River

This bush pub is a local favourite. You can expect themed weekends and live music on occasion. The food is tasty and affordable. Try their popular Lazy Burger (with a double patty) for a mere R70. Opening times: Tuesday to Friday from noon to 8 pm; Saturday to 9 pm; Sunday to 4 pm. Closed on Mondays. Directions are on their Facebook page. Contact: 082 867 5702; facebook.com/lazyriverdinokeng

Ngata Safari Lodge

Carl and Elize Morin fled the corporate world in 2014 and bought what is now Ngata Safari Lodge. Their restaurant has a one-of-akind, Texas-style smoker (made from 800 kg of steel!) that turns out delicious smoked ribs and chicken seasoned with Carl’s secret mixture. Prices start at R125. They also have accommodation and a great spa menu. Check online. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm (closed Mondays). The kitchen closes at 8.30 pm on a weekend, but the venue remains open until midnight. Directions are on the website. Contact: 084 600 4686 (Elize); ngatasafari.co.za
