Is it safe? Keep an eye on the news and make sure that the Goma region is considered safe for the time of your planned visit. The park won’t risk taking tourists out if there are security issues.

What does it cost? It’s expensive, but it’s the kind of trip you’ll do once in a lifetime – and it’s worth every cent. A mountain gorilla permit costs US$400 per person (about R5 100) and a hike up Nyiragongo costs US$300 per person (R3 830). This rate includes overnight accommodat­ion. Food costs extra, as does the service of a porter. Transport to the different parts of the park also costs extra (US$94 – R1 200 – for a one-way ride from Goma to Bukima, for example), but it’s not advisable to drive yourself. Toast’s weekend in the Congo cost about US$1 000 (R12 770).

How fit should I be? The fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.
