SWALLOW’S NEST, PRINGLE BAY

-

Pringle Bay might only be 85 km from Cape Town, but there’s very little of the big city here. Most of the roads are gravel and fynbos grows between the houses. Life moves at a slow pace. Whatever you’re doing – whether it’s walking on the beach or building sandcastles with your kids – you only have to turn your head north for a view of the Kogelberg mountains that tower over the village. The Buffels River rises deep in those mountains and empties into the sea at Pringle Bay’s main beach. Give the kids some boogie boards and they’ll splash around in the shallow water of the lagoon for hours. Dogs are also welcome. After a morning on the beach, visit Kogelberg Nature Reserve about 20 km east along the R44 towards Hermanus. (Conservation fee R40 per adult; R20 per child; free with a Wild card.) Walk along the banks of the Palmiet River – it’s an easy stroll along mostly even terrain, even toddlers can join in. There are paths that turn off to clearings or slabs of rock next to the river where you can swim. Later, light a braai at the cottage and watch the sun set. What a day! Facilities: Swallow’s Nest is a cosy four-sleeper cottage in a cul-de-sac about five minutes from the beach. There’s one bedroom and a loft with a sheltered braai area outside. There’s also a fireplace inside to keep you warm in winter. Pets are welcome. Rates: From R850 per night (off-peak season). Niggles? There’s no shower, only a bath. Also, bring a rope to use as a clothesline to dry wet beach towels.
