Summer lovin’

- PIERRE STEYN PSteyn@Media24.com

It’s that time of year again, when South Africans collectively exhale, water the plants one last time (with grey water if you’re in a drought affected area), check that all the windows are locked and the stove is off, then point the fully laden car in the direction of the coast. After a long year’s slog, there are few things as rejuvenating for body and mind as a family holiday at the beach. Which is why we asked eight writers to share their memories of the beach that had the biggest impression on them growing up. We had some fun travelling down memory lane! Check out the story on page 28. The things that made those holidays great still hold true today: Long, hot days spent in a swimming costume from sunrise to sunset, cooling off in the waves, exploring tidal pools, building sandcastles, playing touch rugby and beach cricket, eating soft-serve ice cream as fast as you can before it melts, an afternoon nap under a beach umbrella, a braai at dusk and then falling asleep to the sound of the waves. But the best gift of all is spending time with your loved ones in a relaxed environment. Our story also reinforces the fact that South Africa has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Head west, south or east and you’re bound to find a stretch of sand and surf that will soothe the soul. We know there’s an exciting year full of challenges and adventures waiting in 2018, but first we’re going to kick off our shoes and wriggle our toes in the sand for a bit. We strongly suggest you do the same. Take a deep breath of salty air and enjoy your wellearned break. From everyone at go! we wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
