ELLA WRITES: I live in Mbombela (Nelspruit) and I go to the Kruger Park for two days every month to recharge. A visit to the park is not only about seeing the Big Five; it’s also about all the other smaller animals and birds. I usually explore the southern parts of the park because it’s close to home. Some of my favourite photography destinations include Lake Panic, the Biyamiti weir, Transport Dam and Shitlhave Dam. You’ll see the best sunrises at the Lower Sabie bridge and the best sunsets at Sunset Dam. Last summer, I explored the park from south to north over a period of two weeks. My tour kicked off at Phabeni Gate and I drove all the way to Crooks’ Corner, taking photos along the way. It was just after the drought had ended and the landscape was lush and green. There weren’t many animals to be seen, but it didn’t matter. I couldn’t get enough of the scenery and the trees, especially this stately baobab north of Punda Maria.

TOAST SAYS: The baobab is the real king of the Kruger. Elephants have a hard time pushing them over and lions like to nap in the shade of these mighty giants. When a park is blessed with trees like this one, animals are a bonus. Baobabs tower over the surrounding veld – it’s for this reason that early explorers travelled from one baobab to the next. Each tree was a landmark. I like Ella’s central composition and the fact that the branches of the tree are above the horizon, which makes the tree stand out clearly. And all that green! What a sight.
