Tuck in at The Hickory Shack

Devour some Texan-style barbecue fare just off the N2. Founder of The Hickory Shack, Jay Haupt, moved to Elgin six years ago and converted an old farm shed into a smokehouse. The restaurant’s slogan is “slow cooked, served fast!” Indeed, the meat takes time to prepare: Everything is roasted at 120° C. Chicken wings – the “fastest” items to cook – take two hours! The brisket is cooked for up to 16 hours, using apple and oak wood from the valley to add flavour. The meat is spiced with a dry rub and the smoking process allows the natural taste to come through. Sauces are served on the side. Try the beef brisket (R115) or the belly ribs (R115) with some beans or buttermilk mash (R25 each). There’s a play area outside for the kids and the restaurant is dog-friendly. It’s a great spot to break your journey if you’re travelling on to Hermanus or beyond. Opening times: Daily from 8 am to 10 pm. More info: 021 300 1396; hickoryshack.co.za

Stock up at Peregrine

This mega farm stall is an Elgin institution and you can find just about anything inside. Stock up on fresh produce for the weekend, or sit down for a meal at the café (open daily from 7.30 am to 4 pm). Grab a farmhouse breakfast (R72) or try their pulled pork tostada (R120). They also have a kiddies’ menu – junior burgers (R59) and mini milkshakes (R25) to fill hungry tummies. There’s even a new “padkos” wing outside, where you can grab a quick coffee and one of their famous chicken pies. Opening times: The farm stall is open from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm in summer; until 6 pm in winter. More info: 021 848 9011; peregrinefarmstall.co.za
