KAMBERG NATURE RESERVE

-

OUR PICK Kamberg was named after a nearby ridge, which looks like a rooster’s comb ( kam in Afrikaans). It’s one of the smallest Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife reserves, but it packs a punch in terms of tranquillity. Do one of the many day hikes, picnic next to the Mooi River, fish for trout or learn more about rock art at the Rock Art Centre. You can also do a guided rock art tour to the world-famous Game Pass Shelter. Facilities: Each chalet has a kitchen and braai facilities (bring your own firewood). A daily cleaning service is included in the rate (wash your own dishes). There’s DStv in the communal living area. Rates: Two-bed chalet from R780 per night; six-bed chalet from R900 per night for four people, plus R115 per additional person. Day visitors R40 per adult; R20 per child under 12. Guided rock art hike R75 per person. Fly-fishing permit R130 per day. Niggles? You already know what to expect from an Ezemvelo chalet… The units are basic and clean, but you might need to bring your own steak knife. How to get there? Follow the R103 from Mooi River to Rosetta and turn right onto Mpofana Road ( just after Rosetta Hotel; look for the brown signs to Kamberg). It’s tar for about 32 km and gravel for the final 10 km. THE KNOLL HISTORIC GUEST FARM, HILTON

This guest farm has a long and proud history and has offered lodging to many people over the years, from early transport riders to former prime minister Jan Smuts. You can also see remnants of ox-wagon tracks on the property. Jan Smuts House is surrounded by an assortment of cottages. Some have an inter-leading door between them; others have spacious family rooms. There’s a cosy bar with a fireplace and lots of space on the farm to stretch your legs. If you’re here on a Wednesday, go to The Barn for a live music show. The Knoll is a popular wedding venue and is often booked out over weekends. Make sure you book well in advance. Facilities: Electric blankets, Wi-Fi, braai facilities, swimming pool and cleaning services (book beforehand). Some units have kitchens; others only have a microwave and a kettle. Meals available on request. Rates: Khaya Budget room from R460 per night (sleeps two); Stables Cottage budget option (sleeps up to four) from R500 per night; Groenekloof family rooms (sleep up to five) from R760 per night. Niggles? Some units share a bathroom and a kitchen so keep that in mind if you value your privacy. How to get there? Take the Hilton exit off the N3 and drive into town. When you get to the second set of traffic lights, carry on for about 2,5 km until you reach Knoll Drive. Look for the signs to the guest farm. Contact: 076 555 5408; theknoll.co.za
