TOAST SAYS: Luzanne took this photo in Yzerfontein on the West Coast. That’s her greyhound Oliver. It was his first time at the beach and he clearly loved it! This shot nicely demonstrates the rule of thirds – a composition technique that has been used by artists since oil paint was invented, and which was adopted by photographers in later years. According to the rule of thirds, a composition is more pleasing when your main subject (Oliver in this case) is not in the middle of the frame, but one third from the left or the right. Whether you choose left or right depends on which direction your subject is moving in, or which direction it’s looking. If your subject is on the run – like Oliver – give him some room to move, to prevent your composition from feeling cramped. Oliver is running “into” the frame. Good boy! The background should preferably adhere to the rule of thirds too, especially if you include the horizon. Position the line of the horizon one third from the bottom of the frame, so the rest of the frame is filled with clouds. The horizon can also be one third from the top of the frame if the foreground is more interesting. Every photo is different and you have to make quick decisions, especially when you’re trying to snap an action shot. Luzanne, you did great work here – you should take Oliver to the beach more often!
