The Kruger is wild

- JAN VAN DER WESTHUYSEN, Port Elizabeth

My wife Jo took this photo (right) through the windscreen. She was very nervous so please excuse the poor quality. Near the Nkuhlu picnic site, we pulled up behind two other vehicles that were waiting for a herd of elephants to move away from the entrance. The elephants walked towards us and the other vehicles carefully reversed away. We were now in front, but we often visit Addo so we thought we knew what we were doing. We waited patiently for the herd to pass. All went well until a cow broke off from the herd and walked over to our vehicle. There wasn’t time to question our knowledge of ellie behaviour or formulate a Plan B. We basically held our breath, avoided eye contact, sat very still and prayed while the elephant explored every inch of our vehicle, from the grille to the windscreen. Jo took a quick photo. The elephant finally lost interest and we could breathe again. Phew! We continued our game drive and near the Timbavati picnic site we saw two lions near the road. I took photos with my zoom lens through Jo’s open window. Later when we looked at the photos, we were alarmed to see how close the lion was to Jo! That night in camp, I heard Jo scream. There was a huge baboon spider on the ground next to her chair. We said we wanted adventure and the Kruger delivered!
